Fishermen find bomb

The unusual find sparked an emergency call out from the maritime authorities and an emergency evacuation of the crew.

The discovery took place four kilometres from the Grancamp-Maisy port, in the Calvados area.

Although the bomb had been on the seabed for 70 years, it still posses danger as “any movement” can lead to an explosion, according to the authorities.

A maritime expert told Info Normandie: “Any simple movement, especially with the trawler, can suffice to strike its leader and ignite the military load it contains.”

The officials have warned that a simple movement of the boat can be enough to ignite the dangerous bomb.

The fishing boat was around two nautical miles off the coast in the English Channel when it found the German bomb with a huge amount of explosives.

The divers freed the bomb from their net using straps and lowered it back into the water so bomb disposal experts can defuse it next week.
