Pigeon de la Founaise, meaning Peak of the Furnace, burst into life at 1am BST (4am local time) on Saturday, September 15.

The eruption is still visible from Piton de Bert, another volcano on the island.

Several volcanic fissures have opened up on the southern flank of the volcano in the Rivals Crater area.

The 2,631m-high Pigeon de la Founaise is more than 500,000 years old and is considered to be one of the world’s most active volcanoes right now.

Seismic activity has been increasing since the start of the September, according to Piton de la Fournaise Volcanological Observatory, which is responsible for its monitoring.

What does the footage show?

The video first shows a luminous orb of light in the distance snaking sideways into a river.

Then the camera zooms in to show the eruption’s full power as sparks of molten lava are catapulted skywards.

Tourists regularly flock to see the popular attraction, with about 400,000 visitors arriving each year.

But Saturday’s eruption closed the Pas de Bellecombe trail as a safety precaution.
