Trump warns Iran MUST be ISOLATED and condemns Merkel in furious UN speech

The US President called on UN countries to follow his lead and continue to pile pressure on the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

He warned a major new gas pipeline project between Germany and Russia would lead to Germany becoming “completely reliant” on Russian energy.

And he accused OPEC members — which are the world’s biggest oil producing nations — of “ripping off the rest of the world” by raising oil prices.

President Trump used his last address to the UN General Assembly to attack North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for his nuclear and ballistic missile programmes but praised the dictator this year for the “steps taken” in working towards denuclearisation.

Instead, Mr Trump’s fury was this time directed at Iran, which he branded a “corrupt dictatorship”.

He said: «Iran’s leaders sow chaos, death and destruction.

«They do not respect their neighbours or borders or the sovereign rights of nations.»

Mr Trump said his administration has launched a “campaign of economic pressure to deny Iran funds” for its role in stoking conflict in the Middle East.

And he warned he would impose more sanctions after the latest round of penalties on the country’s oil exports kick in on November 5.

He said: «Iran has acted very badly.

«We look forward to having a great relationship with Iran, but it won’t happen now.»

The US leader also took aim at Angela Merkel’s Germany for its part in a multi-billion pound gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea.

The Nord Stream 2 project, which is being funded by Russian state-owned giant Gazprom and a group of major European energy firms, will supply natural gas to Germany and the European Union.

But Mr Trump told the UN its construction would result in Germany becoming “completely reliant” on Russian energy.

He has previously criticised Germany for making a mockery of Western sanctions imposed against Russia by sending billions of dollars to a state-owned firm.

A year on from his furious General Assembly speech in which he labelled North Korea’s Kim Jong-un “rocket man” and threatened to “totally destroy” the hermit kingdom, Mr Trump today struck a much more conciliatory tone and even praised the dictator.

The US leader said: “The missiles and rockets are no longer flying in every direction, nuclear testing has stopped, some military facilities are already being dismantled.”

«I would like to thank Chairman Kim for his courage and for the steps he has taken, though much work remains to be done.
