Macron UNDER ATTACK: Leader ‘too busy’ to join Prince William for Battle of Amiens service

The French president, who grew up in Amiens, remained at his lavish presidential retreat in Fort de Brégançon, while the Duke of Cambridge and Prime Minister Theresa May paid their respects at the First World War commemorations.

French prime minister, Édouard Philippe, also failed to attend.

Alain Houpert, a senator from the opposition Republicans, attacked the pair for “a lack of gratitude towards those who gave their lives for France”.

Florian Philippot, leader of the Patriots party, said: “Theresa May and Prince William are present to commemorate the terrible Battle of Amiens, which saw our soldiers fight heroically.

«Where are Philippe and Macron?”

Instead, Geneviève Darrieussecq, Secretary of State for Veterans Affairs, and Florence Parly, Minister of Armies, represented the French Government.

Mayor of Amiens, Brigitte Fouré, said: “I think that for the British, August 8 is an extremely important date but it is in the middle of a lull in French political life.

“Our government has just gone on holiday,” adding that it was «maybe not the best time for us to have high authorities in Amiens.”

Jumping to his defence Director General of the World War I Centennial Mission, Joseph Zimet, insisted that Emmanuel Macron would soon «devote ten days of his agenda» to the commemorations of the First World War.

Prince William and Mrs May were in northern France on Wednesday to attend commemorations marking the centenary of the Battle of Amiens — the beginning of the end of the World War I — at Amiens historic Cathedral.

Prime Minister Mrs May paid tribute to the «courage, bravery and skill» of troops who fought in the First World War Battle of Amiens at the poignant commemoration service marked its centenary.

While, William paid homage to the city which «connected» the allied forces in France and the UK during the war at the event staged exactly 100 years since the start of the offensive.

But Mr Macron was recently blasted after he ordered a swimming pool to be built in the grounds of retreat on the French Riviera to avoid being harassed by the paparazzi.

It is expected to cost taxpayers around €15,000 (£13,000), which sparked claims he is living up to his reputation as the “president of the rich”.

This week a shock poll revealed the French president’s approval rating hit a new low following a scandal surrounding his former senior bodyguard.

The poll, conducted by YouGov for the Huffington Post and the French television channel CNews, showed that Mr Macron’s approval rating had fallen to 27 per cent, down five percentage points from June.

The survey also marked the young centrist’s lowest YouGov approval rating since he took power in May 2017.

Mr Macron’s office came under fire last month after Alexandre Benalla, the former head of the president’s security detail, was caught on camera assaulting two May Day protesters while off duty and wearing a riot helmet and police tags.
