In the recording Devin Nunes, a Republican Congressman and chair of the House Intelligence Committee, admitted that: “We have to keep the majority.
“If Jeff Sessions won’t un-recuse and Mueller won’t clear the President, we’re the only ones, which is really the danger.
“We have to keep all those seats.”
The audio was aired Wednesday by MSNBC on ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’.
MSNBC said it received the “secret audio recording” from a left-wing group called Fuse Washington.
A member of Fuse Washington paid to attend a Republican fundraiser last week where Mr Nunes made his remarks.
A spokesman for Mr Nunes responded angrily saying: “It’s unsurprising to see the left-wing media spin Chairman Nunes’ routine observations as some nefarious plot.
“These same media outlets spent the last year and a half touting non-existent Russia collusion conspiracy.”
The Mueller investigation is currently looking at the extent of Russian intervention in the 2016 US Presidential election, and whether there was any collusion from the Trump campaign.
If collusion is proved Trump could potentially face impeachment.
Mr Nunes, a California Republican, also chairs the powerful House Intelligence Committee.
The Committee conducted its own investigation into Russian election interference which finished this year.
The Republicans on the Committee issued a report saying there was no evidence of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, but the Committee Democrats refused to accept it.
They have launched their own investigation which will likely intensify if they take control of the House in November.
A joint report by the CIA, FBI and other security agencies was published in January 2017 alleging that Russian action ahead of the 2016 vote was designed to help the Trump campaign.
Trump has repeatedly described the ongoing investigation as a «witch hunt».
