British tourist in Tenerife rape attack: Moroccans arrested after woman saved by surfer

Tenerife

An off-duty police officer who was going surfing with a friend stopped the sex attack after rushing to the woman’s aid when he heard her screaming for help.

The drama happened in the popular resort of Playa de Las Americas in the south of the island.

Local reports say the holidaymaker agreed to go to the beach where she was targeted with one of the men after meeting up with him during a night out.

The struggle that led to the off-duty police officer intervening began when a friend of the first Moroccan unexpectedly appeared on the scene and attempted to have sex with the tourist.

The policeman and his pal held the suspects following a chase until colleagues arrived to formally arrest them.

One of the Moroccan men has been remanded in jail pending an ongoing criminal investigation after appearing in front of a judge in a closed court hearing.

The other suspect, an illegal immigrant, has been sent to a foreigners’ holding centre known as a CIE.

The British holidaymaker is understood to have flown back to the UK after giving a statement to police and ratifying her version of events to the same investigating judge who ordered the suspects’ remand in custody.

The 25-year-old is accused of targeting the 74-year-old during a break-in at her apartment in an island holiday resort.

The immigrant, who was known to police, was identified as the suspect after being linked to the attack by his DNA.

The sickening attack happened around 11am on May 13 when the victim was alone in her apartment.

Investigators say she was forced into a bedroom and raped after the intruder found her inside the flat during the break-in.

The unnamed Brit, who was residing at the property in the municipality of Arona which includes the popular holiday resort of Playa de las Americas, was hospitalised for seven days afterwards.

A police source described the suspect as a drifter who was known to police from previous arrests but had never been accused of a serious sex crime.

The items he allegedly stolen included money and jewellery.
