Bali earthquake today: MAPPED — Where have Bali earthquakes struck today?


The latest aftershock measured magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale and struck northern Lombok on Thursday, August 9 at 8.33pm UTC (9.33pm BST).

The earthquake hit the island at a depth of 17.6km, just 5km south of Belanting.

The epicentre of Thursday evening’s aftershock was on land.

The tremor is the latest in a series of aftershocks to rock the Indonesian island which sits on the Ring of Fire in the Indian Ocean, after a deadly magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck on Sunday.

The official death toll from the initial earthquake stood at 321 as of Friday, according to Indonesia’s mitigation agency (BNPB).

Over the last seven days, a total of 20 earthquakes have hit the region according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said there has been 355 aftershocks following Sunday’s quake.

He said after Thursday’s aftershock: “Residents panicked and ran from their shelters. Several buildings were further damaged.”

Some areas of the island have been cut off as bridges and roads were devastated in the aftermath.

More than 67,000 homes were damaged, 468 schools, six bridges and 10 health centres.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing to remove victims from the debris.

Mr Sutopo said “people are still traumatised” from the strong quake which has claimed the lives of hundreds.

Thousands have been left homeless and in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter in Lombok.

Officials have said around three-quarters of Lombok’s rural north had been without electricity since Sunday, although power has been restored in most areas.

Christopher Rassi, the head of a Red Cross assessment team said: “We are still waiting for assessments from some of the more remote area in the north of the island, but it is already clear that Sunday’s earthquakes was exceptionally destructive.

“I visited villages yesterday that were completely collapsed.”

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island.

In total, an estimated 20,000 people have been displaced by the massive earthquake.
